Master Transportation Plan
The MTP process has now progressed to Phase 3 – Setting Vision and Goals. Public consultation on the draft vision and goals will be undertaken during the first week of May 2012.
The City’s existing Long-Range Transportation Plan was developed in 1998 and recommended improvements for all modes over the next 20 years. Since the existing Transportation Plan was adopted, there have been a number of changes to land use patterns and the transportation network within New Westminster.
The updated Master Transportation Plan will guide decision-making for transportation in New Westminster over the next 25 years and beyond by recommending improvements for all modes of transportation, including walking, cycling, public transit, goods movement, and vehicles.
Pattullo Bridge
As part of this phase of the MTP, initial consultation, will also be undertaken on the proposed replacement of the Pattullo Bridge. The current direction is to conduct a consultation process considering all Pattullo Bridge options within the context of the City’s existing transportation policies and the directions emerging from the Master Transportation Plan process.
In the late 1970’s, the GVRD had a conceptual plan for a combined road/rail/LRT bridge to replace the Patullo Bridge and I think it would be a wise decision to resurrect the plans as the region needs both a road and rail bridge and LRT if Surrey builds a line.
