PlaceSpeak Artificial Intelligence AI Project with BCIT CIP ISSP

Share

Beginning in January of 2024, PlaceSpeak was fortunate to work with six talented BCIT students in the Computer Information Technology (CIT) Diploma program as part of the Industry Sponsored Student Projects program (ISSP) .

The Industry Sponsored Student Projects program (ISSP) provides students with real-life experience by working on IT or software development projects directly from industry. Students work in teams or individually with an industry sponsor, proceeding through the development life-cycle to develop IT or software solutions.  The concept of ISSP is simple: put BCIT Computing students to work on creating a viable or software solution for your business challenge.

Program students presented their Industry Sponsored Student Projects (ISSP) on April 12th at BCIT Downtown Campus. PlaceSpeak Founder and CEO, Colleen Hardwick, was in attendance.  Brock Yuan Boyden Zhou Daniel Lazzaroni Hei Shun Kong Ian MacDonald Vincent Wong

This Computer Systems Technology (CST) project team recently took on a project for PlaceSpeak to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to generate reports from public consultation discussion forum qualitative data.

The objective was to take hundreds of discussion comments and produce downloadable reports which included a distilled Summary of the discussion responses and then charts containing key components : Key Phrases, Sentiment, Emotion Detection and Confidence Score.

The solution also generated bar and pie charts for data visualization.

“I was impressed with how well organized the BCIT team was,” says Founder & CEO, Colleen Hardwick.  Regular Monday scrum check-ins kept the project on track as we iterated the solution. Each member of the team was delegated to undertake specific tasks, and then weave the components together into the ultimate solution.  It was an emergent process, and took a lot of knowledge and creativity from the team”.

The ISSP class was a great success and PlaceSpeak hopes to complete the scope of work forward throughout 2024.
