PlaceSpeak CEO, Colleen Hardwick, travelled to Bucharest in May to participate in the 2024 Global Forum on Modern Direct Democracy.
The Forum registered more than 300 participants, from five continents. Around 50 countries were represented by civil society, academics, activists, and political representatives. Over 150 speakers took the floor and engaged in the creation of informative, creative and innovative workshops, panels and bootcamps. 70 sessions were held discussing contemporary issues of direct democracy from different perspectives and approaches.
We explored the theme of trust in direct democracy at local, regional, and international levels. Cultural approaches to participation, the role of media and technology, democratic tools in undemocratic contexts, and trends in the Black Sea Region and Central and Eastern Europe were especially highlighted during the Global Forum during discussions.
Hardwick was part of a Panel entitled: Digital Democracy: Building Trust and Empowering Local Communities Globally held at the University of Bucharest, Sociology Department.
